The Paul's Homewood Cafe Story

The Paul's Homewood Cafe story began during the 1940's, when Paul and Helen Nicholas emigrated from Cyprus to the United States. Paul worked in diners and cafes in New York City before settling in Annapolis. In 1949, he launched their restaurant business, first on Main Street, then at the Homewood neighborhood location where it stands today.

"Paul's Lunch" began as a lunch counter and became popular with the local business community as a place to discuss the day's events. During the 1960's and 70's, Annapolis High School students frequented Paul's to enjoy foot-long hot dogs, sodas, and even a game on the pinball machine.  In 1994, Paul's began a tradition of serving classic Mediterranean dishes in a friendly, casual setting. Paul's was a place where friends could meet as Annapolis grew, so did “Paul’s”

Today, Paul and Helen's children continue the tradition. Owners Chris Nicholas and his sister, Anna Marriott, are the familiar faces behind the “family feel” that makes patrons feel welcome when they visit. Anna's daughters Lea, Deanna and Michelle are also part of the tradition.

The dining room has the classy, yet casual feel of a European bistro. The menu features Mediterranean and Greek specialties from land and sea, along with American favorites including grilled steaks and Paul's own version of the Maryland crab cake.

The recent building renovation is a testament to the restaurant's success. Patrons now find a bigger dining room, a mezzanine dining area, and an outdoor patio. The ambitious expansion was made possible by the support of Paul's loyal customers.

Owners Chris and Anna extend their warm welcome. To our long-time patrons, we look forward to serving you again. If you've never visited us: we look forward to meeting you.
